BEARD BALM VS BEARD BUTTER? WHAT SHOULD I USE?

One of the most frequently asked questions here at Mad Viking HQ, without a doubt, is “What’s the difference between your beard balm and beard butter and what should I use?”  Well let’s dive in and get to the bottom of this mystery!

Mad Viking Beard Balm is a semi-solid product made up of shea butter, cocoa butter along with a handful of natural carrier oils. Our beard balm also contains a small amount of beeswax.  Our beard balm is designed to pull triple duty.  It softens the hair, moisturizes the skin as well as your beard, and it provides nourishment to the hair follicles.  The beeswax that we add provides a thin coat of protection from the elements as well as locking in the moisture that you’re trying to provide to your beard.  Beeswax also provides a small amount of hold, preventing fly-aways and offering a more “groomed” appearance.

Using beard balm in in your daily routine along with a small amount of beard oil will have a drastic positive effect on the way that your beard looks and feels!

Now let’s look at our Beard Butter.

Mad Viking Beard Butter genuinely looks almost identical to our beard balm.  If you put the two products side by side, the untrained eye probably wouldn’t be able to tell them apart.  But they are very different products indeed.  Our beard butter is comprised of mostly all natural butters including Shea, Cocoa, and Mango butter.  We added much larger quantities of butters and only use a small amount of the most important carrier oils, including Jojoba and Argan Oil.  What you’re left with is a very soft product that heats up and melts almost immediately in your hand.  It absorbs very quickly and doesn’t leave any residue in the beard.  It is specifically designed to mimic the natural oils produced by your skin.

The best way to describe our beard butter would be to say that it is like a leave in deep conditioner for your beard.  The results from using Mad Viking Beard Butter can be noticed almost immediately.  Only one or two applications and you’ll notice that your beard is much softer!  And because there’s no beeswax in our beard butter, you will be left with a much more natural looking beard.

So which should you use? Beard Balm or Beard Butter?

If you want more control or style and hold to tame flyway hairs, beard balm may be the choice for you. If you are looking for deep conditioning to soften and promote better healthy beard growth, but still want a light hold to style your beard, beard butter may be the right choice. No matter what beard length from 1 month of growth to terminal length both products will work just fine. It basically just boils down to style and control. I would say a lot of the guys with longer beards tend to use beard butter vs the balm because they have less fly away stray hairs. This primarily happens because the weight of the long beard hair will tend to weigh itself down and become less wild.

Whichever product you choose, the balm or butter, Mad Viking Beard Co. uses only the highest quality ingredients.  All of our products are made by hand in small batches, right here in the good ole USA!

Do you offer any substitutions in your beard bundles? I have a longer beard and prefer the butter over the balm and I noticed that you offer the balm in your bundles. This will be my first time trying this product and I’m excited about it because you have a great selection of scents. Thanks

My beard is only 4 months old, and about an 1” 1/2 in length. My question about is about when/what is a good Oil, Balm and butter routine for strong and long beard growth. I currently use my oil at night after showering with a beard wash and conditioner. My balm and butter I alternate day to day in the morning when I wash my face. Is the oil more effective if used more often? I’m really just winging it based off what I’ve read online.

    Thank you
